A big update and a big change

So here we are – week 25… almost half a year of eating pretty much nothing and mostly having 600kcal per day…

I’ve not updated the blog for a few weeks but a fair bit has changed so it’s really time for an update and time to try and motivate myself into updating a bit more often.

The week back from the US trip actually went pretty well – I lost 10lb in the following week so I was back on track and had managed to stick to the plan fairly well.    The subsequent two weeks however were not as good and I found it really tough to stick to it – my motivation had gone and I was getting pretty bored of the chocolate shake (the only one I really liked) and the toffee and fudge bars… LighterLife also isn’t the cheapest of diets so it was costing me a fortune to lose 1 or 2lb a week.   To give an idea it was about £60 for the food and £15 for the counselling / weigh in – which has obviously been worth it as I’ve lost almost 90lb.

So earlier this week I decided I needed a change.

I really like Lighter Life.    It has really helped change my life and given me more confidence than I’ve ever had in my adult life.

But I do wonder if they have got a bit lazy and taken things for granted – perhaps because of the increased concentration on their 5:2 plan and Superdrug deal.

Other competitors are coming out with different packs and flavours and offer amazing online support but LL don’t seem to have changed anything in the 6 months that I have been there, other than bringing in some jelly.     I honestly think that they need to up their game plan a litte.

So I’ve moved supplier.    I went out on Wednesday night to a restaurant to a Gordon Ramsey restaurant and took a day off and had an amazing steak that I appreciated more considering the amount of time it had been since I last eat such a thing!

And today I started the new plan.    I ordered a bunch of different options from Slim & Save whose meal choices is so much more varied – to give an example the have 18 shake flavours compared to LL’s 4.

I’ve also opted to go for a 3 pack a day option with a small high protein meal instead of four packs which adds on about an extra 50kcal per day but I think will make a big different to my life and help me stick to the plan.   I’m excited about the change but if the weight loss doesn’t continue then I know I can go back to Lighter Life if needed.

I still need to think of a nice way of explaining this to my councillor though who has been massively supportive so far..

On another note the exercise regime does continue to go well.   I’ve kept up with doing a 5k on Saturdays and last week got my time down to 34 minutes from the original 44 when we started earlier in the year.   I’m also happy to say that I got through the ballot for the Ride 100 London on the 2nd August which is a 100 mile cycle lasting around 8hrs in the middle of summer.   Did I just say happy?   Lots of training to do for this but exciting times none the less and something to aim towards which will hopefully keep me on track.

So now time for the usual update..

Target 1 – Lose 14lb (1 stone) – Reward – Destiny for Xbox One – DONE
Target 2 – Lose 25lb – DONE 23/09/14
Target 3 – Lose 35lb – DONE 07/10/14
Target 4 – Lose 50lb – DONE 05/11/14  Amazon Fire TV or Raspberry Pi
Target 5 – Lose 70lb – DONE 09/12/14
Target 6 – Lose 85lb
Target 7 – Lose 100lb – Reward – Tattoo!
Target 8 – Loose 115lb (original goal)
Target 9 – Loose 125lb
FINAL GOAL – Loose 140lb (10st) – Reward – Wedding Ring
PROGRESS: 89lb gone – 51lb to go (63.6% gone) – 29.67% of original weight lost

So I have now gone past target 6 and next week I should have lost over 30% of my original weight…  Time to start looking around for a tattoo I guess..

Back from the USA

So I took a week off whilst I was away in the USA – which really means that I took about 2 weeks off as my mind was telling me before hand “well you’re going away, you may as well eat this” during the week before I went.

Originally I told myself that I’d eat well, get some exercise in and not aim to put weight on.

What actually happened is I ate terribly (lots of wings and some great ribs!) and drank a lot of booze!   I didn’t stick to the plan at all and only managed one gym session despite both of my hotels having gym access.

So tonight I went to weigh in and two weeks since my last weigh in I had put on 5lb – and 8lb since my great week of 10lb loss after Christmas.   It’s not great – and it’s set me back, but it could have been worse!

This week is going to be tough!   Really need to get back on the plan, back into keto and have a big weight loss week..

So yesterday I did this…

I decided on Friday afternoon that Saturday would be a good day to do my first Park Run.    I had done zero prep for it as despite doing cardio 3 times a week for the past 8 weeks or so, I’ve not done running at all.

It was hard work but very fun and rewarding.   I could have probably gone a little faster as I was running with a family member but the thing that mattered was completing it – especially as it was raining and very muddy…  Despite doing a 10k a couple of years ago I never really got into or enjoyed running – but I found it a lot easier after losing the weight I have and am already planning on doing it again next week.

If any of my local friends want to join me, let me know!

First update of 2015

So I’ve not updated for a few weeks as Christmas kind of got in the way of blogging… and weight loss!  I ended up eating far too much of all the wrongs things despite my best intentions and put on 3lb – the first time I’ve gained weight since I started the plan in September.

Since then (Monday) I’ve got straight back into it and my scales at home suggest that I’ve already lost somewhere between 6-8lb within the space of a few days,  meaning I have high hopes for next week’s weigh in.   I feel like I’ve found my mojo again and am finding it a lot easier to stick to the plan than I did before Christmas.   Perhaps the few days off and the gain was exactly what I needed?   I also feel like I’ve got so much more energy & have been busy getting things done in the garden and the house.

I found a good website on pinterest this week called Modelmydiet – which shows what you the “average” body type looks like at different weights, here is my start weight and current weight..

And here it is with my start vs. my goal..   Be interesting to see how it compares to my before and after photos when I am at goal!

The good thing about Christmas was that I got lots of new clothes and vouchers – it was so nice to be able to go and shop in “real” shops and buy stuff that fits- some even at a size L, rather than XXL or even XXXL where I was when I started.

Really excited about getting to my goal in 2015.   Will update again to share how the week pans out after weight in on Tuesday evening.

Adding Fitness to the Lighter Life Plan

My challenge this week is to work out exactly how to add exercise to my routine. When I originally started Lighter Life I was told that I needed to be quite careful around doing exercise because of the low amount of calories that you consume, but I really want to try and get a bit fitter at the same time as losing the weight.

For what it’s worth – here is what the Lighter Life website says:

Can I exercise on LighterLife?
Yes, an active lifestyle is really important for your health. Simply choose something you enjoy and do it regularly, such as walking, swimming, going to the gym or an exercise class. If you’re already enjoying an active lifestyle and are quite fit, just take it steady at first. If you’re new to it, please speak to your GP, particularly if you have any medical conditions that could be affected by physical activity.

I was referred to the gym by the Doctors and have an appointment on Wednesday afternoon so this is one step and hopefully will get a plan together of how often to go, etc. I am however a little worried that the gym will turn around if I tell them I am only having 600kcal and tell me that I can’t sign up! I guess we’ll cross that bridge if we come to it..

In the mean time I’ve set myself a mini challenge for the rest of the month. There are lots of 30 day challenges online so I’ve built my own, called the “30 day Wii Fit and Yoga for beginners challenge” which clearly rolls right off the tongue.

The challenge itself is pretty simple – it consists of 30 minutes of WiiFit and 20 minutes of Yoga nearly every day for 30 days… I started it last night and used the following YouTube videos for the Yoga:

To make sure that I do it every day I’ve put together a quick calendar so that I can sign it to see how I get on. Will print this off and put it on the wall / fridge so that I don’t forget to do it!

Will add this to my weekly update to see what kind of difference it might be making – am quite looking forward to getting back to Zumba at some point and I think I’m going to sign up Lindsey too so we can perhaps get a baby-sitting one or two nights a week and go to a few classes together..

Whilst I’m enjoying my weight loss….. One of these would go down pretty well right now…

Oh well – only about 4 months to go! 🙂

A tale of cheating, my inner child and a week 3 weigh in

So this week has been a challenge – which apparently is to be expected of week 3 as the boredom of drinking 2 milkshakes and eating 2 bars sets in…

It was also a challenge which I failed a little. As a reminder it’s really important on Lighter Life that you stick to the diet – and don’t eat ANYTHING else – you are not even allowed sugar free chewing gum.

So the reason I failed this week is because I have eaten a little food – a couple of slices of bread and a little taste of the food I was cooking for the family on Saturday and Sunday. It’s not the end of the world and it’s not like I’ve been on a binge, but it’s still a little frustrating and disappointing.

The worse thing about the above though is that I kept it very secretive – eating the bread when Lindsey was in the other room and hoping not to get “caught”. It’s something that to anyone who hasn’t had weight problems may sound ridiculous. So in class tonight I admitted this and we talked a little about what might have caused me to act in this manner.

My weight really starting to increase when I was at school – I was bullied and pretty much hated my life so took to comfort eating. I think this is when I started to become a bit of a “secret” eater – climbing up on the sides to reach the crisps that my parents had stored on top of a cupboard when they were not looking and eating them as quick as possible so that nobody would notice for example… again this sounds stupid and ridiculous but I think I carried on with this for most of my life – something that I know needs to stop.

Another thing that I need to do this week is get rid of the scales in the house. Whenever I am trying to lose weight I end up getting quite obsessive with checking my weight and have been doing so pretty much 4 or 5 times a day recently – which I don’t think is helping at all. I’ve asked Lindsey to either hide the scales or just get rid of them completely which I think will help as they don’t necessarily match the ones that we have at group and this just makes things worse!

So all in all it was a pretty intense class and left me feeling quite emotional… but there is some good news..

Despite the slight fall of the wagon I have continued to shed some weight this week – another 5lb which brings my weight loss across three weeks to 26lb.  This means I am just 2lb away from the 2 stone mark and have hit the second target that I set! So here is an update on the targets:

Target 1 – Lose 14lb (1 stone) – Reward – Destiny for Xbox One – DONE
Target 2 – Lose 25lb – DONE
Target 3 – Lose 35lb
Target 4 – Lose 50lb
Target 5 – Lose 70lb
Target 6 – Lose 85lb
Target 7 – Lose 100lb
Target 8 – Loose 110lb
FINAL GOAL – Lose 115lb (8st 2lb) – Reward – Wedding Ring
PROGRESS: 26lb gone – 89lb to go (22.61% gone)

The other positive this week is that I’ve started to actual notice the weight loss a lot more.. mainly around my face and chest rather than my gut – which means that top buttons on shirts are actually doing up and my suit jacket no longer seems to feel (and show) the strain of not really fitting as well as it should.

This week I have a few challenges ahead – starting with attending an event tonight in an executive box at Selhurst Park to see Palace vs. Newcastle. It’s organised by Affiliate Window – one of our suppliers – and everyone else will be eating a 3 course meal and drinking before kick off I suspect. Then at the weekend it is Kieran’s 12th birthday where we will either be doing a BBQ or getting a takeout for him and a couple of his mates and I’ll obviously have to avoid the birthday cake!

Hopefully the renewed faith in my will power and ability to succeed in this challenge will help me reach a good number for weight loss this week – with the target to make it over the 30lb mark and bringing my weight closer to being it’s lowest for the past 10 years.

Goals and Rewards

I’ve been thinking a lot about what my goal should be recently and my concern has been around setting a goal that is too high to achieve.   This tends to be what I have always done and one of the reasons I’ve given up is because I’ve not really been getting close enough to it.

So after reading forum posts and blogs I’ve decided to set myself instead a number of different goals and try and have decided that I’ll reward myself for hitting these targets – I’ve not decided on the rewards for each but the idea is that if I see something that I want, instead of buying it straight out (often on the credit card!), I’ll add it to the rewards list.

So here they are:

Target 2 – Lose 14lb (1 stone) –  Reward – Destiny for Xbox One
Target 2 – Lose 25lb
Target 3 – Lose 35lb
Target 4 – Lose 50lb
Target 5 – Lose 70lb
Target 6 – Lose 85lb
Target 7 – Lose 100lb
Target 8 – Loose 110lb
FINAL GOAL – Lose 115lb (8st 2lb) – Reward – Wedding Ring

As of today I’ve only put in two rewards.    The first reward is for Destiny on the Xbox One – this is a bit of a cheeky one as it’s something I planned to get in the US next week but instead decided I should only get it if I have hit the first target as it will hopefully keep me on track.

The main reward – and something that is extremely important to me, is to finally get a wedding ring.   I’ve been married to my wonderful wife now for 10 years but have never had a wedding ring – always telling myself and others it’s because I don’t really like to wear jewelry, which whilst true is something I can get over.

The other reason that I’ve not got one is because when we originally went to look at rings my fingers were too fat to be able to get any of the ones that I really liked or wanted and it was a very embarrassing and depressing experience.    Lindsey has often suggested I get a ring as it is odd not to have one and as a final reward it’s exactly what I want.

These targets may change – perhaps 8st is not achievable for my body – but at least I now have something in writing with where I want to be.
